The Chairish Podcast - What Does A Lighting Designer Do? - 41 min

Lighting is one of the most important—and most amorphous—elements of design. It affects everything we see and has a big impact on how we feel. Yet lighting design is too often misunderstood—or completely overlooked. Two professional lighting designers, Nathan Orsman and Stephen Bernstein, share with host Michael Boodro why they consider themselves the back-up dancers of design, how LEDs have transformed the world and changed the color of light, and why, when it comes to outdoor lighting, a little goes a long way.

The Design You Podcast - AI and Interior Design - 33 min

Artificial intelligence is going to have an impact on the design and creative industries, just like it will in every area of our world and larger existence. The possibilities for AI are massive, and that’s a scary thought. However, with any change, there’s also opportunity.

As designers, if we choose to compete with AI instead of adapting to it, we could become dinosaurs. Tune in this week to start exploring how AI could affect the future of the design industry. I’m discussing some of the speculation around how content will change as a result of AI, and sharing how to make sure you can still create human-to-human connection without getting left behind in the age of AI.

What You'll Learn From This Episode

  • Why we can’t possibly predict the entire impact AI will have on the design industry.

  • The significant advantages AI has over humans when carrying out some aspects of our work as interior designers.

  • How some designers will choose to wait until it’s too late to adapt before really considering AI’s impact.

  • Some incredible things AI is capable of right now that have the potential to make some design jobs much easier.

  • The aspects of being a design creative that will be the easiest for AI to replace.

  • Why I haven’t made my mind up about AI yet, but I’m along for the ride just like you.

  • How we can still create human-to-human connection in the age of AI.

Resilient by Design - How to run a consultation [Rebroadcast] - 39 min

Today’s episode is a rebroadcast of a classic RbD. So much value for designers.

In this episode, host Rebecca Hay shares exactly how she runs a consultation to ensure that both you and your client get the most out of your time together.

During the episode, Rebecca talks about how she didn’t charge for my consultations when I started my business.

Through the episode, Rebecca shares lessons and tidbits she has learned about consultations such as:

  • Get a scheduler - this will save you or your team from having back-and-forth conversations about dates and times for booking consultations

  • Arrive prepared and ready to reiterate your messaging using multiple mediums

  • Set expectations for your clients early and often - This is essential throughout the duration you are working with a client. Talk timelines, budgets, and when you’re taking on new projects.

  • Listening is the most important thing you can do at a consultation, then come the ideas

  • Connect with your client based on what you see around their home - Show them you’re human and fund a common element so that you can make a personal connection

  • Show proof of the value you are bringing them and the possible problems that you will find solutions for - Use past magazine publications, client reviews, and past or ongoing project images with a story
