Interior Design Business - The Danger of Throwing Out Design Fee Numbers - 26 min

Throwing out design fee numbers to potential clients without thinking about it can get you in all kinds of trouble, so why does it happen?

In this episode of Interior Design Business, host Terri Taylor teaches us how to take a $1,500 throw-out fee that’s going to get you in trouble and turn it into a $4,500 fee with a $30,000 budget (or more!). It’s not hard to do, you just need to know how to say it and how to work through it.

Topics covered in this episode include:

  • How to avoid situations that require you to throw out a number without having time to consider it

  • The importance of scheduled discovery calls

  • How to fight the scarcity mindset

Interior Designher: Terri makes a very, very, very important point about pricing your interior design services in this podcast. Since we started Interior Designher, I can’t tell you how many interior designers I have spoken with via email, in Facebook groups, in our own little Linkedin group, on Instagram and in actual real life.

And the number one thing we talk about is money. Which kinda makes sense as we’re all in business to make money to pay the bills and feed our kids, etc. How we price our services is key to that discussion. Being organized & systematized is key to effective & profitable pricing.

In the coming days, I am going to be conducting an interview with interior design coach Nancy Ganzenkaufer about the pricing tool she just created for designers. Called The KEY, Nancy has poured her years of experience coaching 1000s of interior designers into creating a tool that delivers mare than it promises. I’ve had access to The KEY and have had a gaggle of designer friends test it specifically to look for problems.

At it’s core, The KEY is a spreadsheet that calculates pricing estimates for any type of design project - decor, virtual design, full-service decorating, remodel with project mgmt & new builds. But it’s way more than that.

- The KEY lets us accurately estimate design jobs in minutes.

- The KEY comes loaded with time estimates based on Nancy’s years of coaching experience. For designers struggling to get their pricing right, this gives us a yardstick to help us fine tune our rates.

- To avoid underpricing ourselves, The KEY comes loaded with a comprehensive project scope planner.

- The KEY’s Good, Better, Best Guide helps to set client expectations surrounding budgeting for furniture, lighting, etc

- And to help present all of this pricing data to our clients, The KEY also includes Canva-based proposal templates.

As I mentioned above, I will be interviewing Nancy Ganzekaufer about The KEY in the coming days. My interview will give you a lot more specific info about The KEY than my little synopsis here. But…if you don’t want to wait for the interview, you can buy The KEY right now.

Full Disclosure: After testing & critiquing The KEY, we decided that we could fully & honestly endorse it & we agreed to register for her affiliate program. So…if you do purchase The KEY via the link above, we will receive a percentage of the sale prices. I hope everyone is cool with that.

Profit is a Choice - Quiet Quitting in the Workplace - 11 min

Have you heard of quiet quitting? Maybe you have seen or felt it in your business or when speaking with a colleague. Quiet quitting is defined as an emotional quitting instead of physically doing so. On the podcast today, host Michele Williams is exploring quiet quitting. What it is, how it occurs, how to spot it and hopefully stop it before it escalates.

Topics Mentioned:

  • Disengaged

  • Lack of motivation

  • Employee health

  • Connected workplace

Key Thoughts:

  • Quiet quitting is a thing! And we are seeing it more and more in the workplace. It is defined as emotionally quitting – tapping out, all while physically still coming in and doing the job. Michele (1:13)

  • Every person on the team should know the high level of what the business does, why it does it, who it serves and how their job fits in. Michele (1:58)

  • Quiet quitting, when hitting its peak, can show that expectations are out of control and that team members are demanding a realignment. Michele (6:37)

  • One of the best ways to reduce quiet quitting is to have one meaningful conversation each week with each employee lasting 15-30 minutes. Michele (7:30)
