A Well-Designed Business - Power Talk Friday: Hunter Lowder: Is it Time for a Fractional COO? - 1 hr, 4 min

We’ve all heard that we should free ourselves up for CEO-level tasks. But knowing we should and actually following through with it are very different things. It can be hard for entrepreneurs who feel like they have to carry everything in their business. Sometimes, the operations get jumbled along the way.

In today’s episode, host LuAnn Nigara is joined by Hunter Lowder. Hunter runs a business that steps in and serves as fractional COO to get designers back on track. She’s sharing how we can let go, how to find the right person for the job, and how the process of bringing someone in actually works.

Pick It Apart

  • [1:48] LuAnn and Hunter discuss what bringing in an outside COO looks like and how it can work.

  • [5:15] Hunter shares why business owners often experience overwhelm.

  • [10:33] Hunter and LuAnn discuss the importance of mission, vision, and values when bringing someone into the COO role.

  • [18:23] Hunter shares two tips for people who might need assistance in their operations.

  • [33:15] Hunter discusses the different ways she supports business owners.

LuAnn Nigara and Hunter Lowder's Ah-Ha Moments

  • “I think everybody talks about creativity and visionaries…but then there’s the side like me who are operations and systems. We are kind of like the fun police, telling people, it’s great that you love what you do—here’s how we make it sustainable.” - Hunter Lowder

  • “The original entrepreneur gets it going…but now the business is growing and decisions need to be made on the daily. The whole organization is accustomed to the CEO being the decision-maker. But there’s this level where the CEO is seeing the next level for the business but is stuck in the weeds of the day-to-day decision making.” - LuAnn Nigara

The Interior Collective - Carley Page Summers: Styling for Photoshoots vs. Styling for Living - 50 min

The reality is that styling a home for your clients is different than styling for a photoshoot. What looks beautiful in person might not exactly translate over camera. If you want to put your best foot forward on camera, online, and in-person, today’s Interior Collective guest has mastered it all.

Carley Page Summers first explored her love for interior design through photographing and styling spaces. Now, she brings her refined editorial eye and skill for crafting a visual narrative to her interior design projects and her work is simply unmatched. Today, Carley is walking us through the key differences between styling interiors for photo, video, and lifestyle applications.

In this episode, Carley and host Anastasia Casey discuss:

  • How different art forms can inform and inspire interior design

  • The primary differences between interior design and interior styling

  • Skill sets required for interior styling, photography, and design

  • How to style spaces for lifestyle applications

  • How finishes and materials evoke emotion

  • Tips for a positive collaboration between designers and stylists

  • How to successfully prepare for a photoshoot

  • The anatomy of a perfect shot list

  • Capturing interiors on photo and video

Convo By Design - Artificial Intelligence and The Design Industry - 20 min

Most of you have heard and might be curious about whats happening next in the business from a technological standpoint. There has been a lot of chatter recently about NFT’s, the metaverse and AI. At KBIS and Vegas Market recently, some creatives have expressed doubts, others concern and it makes sense.

Years ago, host Josh Cooperman started tracking the amount of time designers and architectural firms spent of social media, marketing and other activities not directly related to the core business of the design practice and it has been astounding to see the time spent on these activities skyrocket.

For me, as the host and publisher of Convo By design, it has been interesting to watch some designers really embrace media, writing blogs and some even recording their own podcasts. I love that because they got to see first hand just how difficult and time consuming it can be to do it right. That being said, we are entering a new era, one of artificial intelligence and that will have some very interesting effects on the business of design. and today…we are going to explore that very idea
