Have you received a suspicious "Giveaway" DM on Instagram, or been followed by an account that may be impersonating someone? On today's Mini News, Emily Lisi walks us through some new account safety features that have been added on Instagram to help users regain access to their accounts if they find themselves locked out or hacked.

  • Instagram has added some new tools to help users regain access to their accounts if they find themselves locked out or hacked. The new recovery center is at instagram.com/hacked. The con is most help options just direct you to the Help Center, which already existed, to help you troubleshoot your issue. In other words, you’re not being put in touch with a real person at Instagram Support. However, the pro is this tool makes the recovery and troubleshooting process much more streamlined. You’re provided quick, easy access to steps you can take depending on your issue.

  • A great new safety measure Instagram has provided is this: if you find yourself locked out of your account, you can choose two of your Instagram friends to confirm your identity and get back into your account. Instagram is also testing measures to combat impersonation and ways to help prevent hacking before it happens. There have been many instances where people impersonate design businesses and run fake giveaways to get other users’ info or hack their accounts. Instagram is testing a feature that sends warnings if an account that is suspected to be an impersonator follows you, or if an account that may be impersonating a business sends you a DM.

  • How can you keep your Instagram account safe before any of this happens to you? Use a strong, unique password with numbers, letters, and special characters. Don’t use this password for anything else. Change your password regularly, at least once a year. Ideally, you should change your password every few months. Lastly, turn on your two-factor authentication in Settings under Privacy and Security. You’ll get a login code when you sign in on a new device, so it offers a little extra security for your account.

The daughter of celebrated designer Mark Hampton, she grew up in the business, and took over her father’s firm at the age of 27 after his untimely passing in 1998. Since then, Alexa has never slowed down, earning endless plaudits for her work, appearing regularly on industry best-of lists, authoring books and columns, and designing product for everyone from Kravet to Theodore Alexander to The Shade Store.

  3. Elevate the Rebecca Ward Design client experience. I hired a client services manager on Porsche’s team that you heard about from Episode 16. I also modified many of our onboarding processes and procedures, checking in with clients, following up with them, and things like that. 

  4. Nurture and grow my team. We hired a new member of the team after a team changeover. During this process, a coach went over our DISC assessments. This helped us learn how to communicate and advocate for ourselves. 

  5. Connect with amazing and inspiring people

  6. Rock 2022, which I did. 

6:37 – How to plan for your short and long-term goals

  1. Look 5 to 10 years out and see where you want to be. What are you doing for work? What is your lifestyle? What are the vacations that you’re having? What’s the car that you’re driving? This part is your dream area or what you want your life to be. How are you going to manifest that? 

  2. Pull back and look at three years out and say, ‘Oh, I’m on track for meeting those 5 to 10-year goals because I’m doing this at three years. It’s just far enough out to have that dream aspect.’ So there’s still an attainable goal out there that I can dream of, but close enough to be realistic. 

  3. Pull back again, look at your one-year goal, and say, ‘Okay, well, what do I want to accomplish within the next 365 days that I have, and break that out into quarters?

  4. Set up a 12-week grid and say, “Okay, Weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and what am I doing that week to achieve these three goals that I’ve set for that quarter?” So say I have six things for the year and might try to accomplish two or three of those per quarter. 

  5. And then, what are the actionable steps I need to take during that quarter to achieve that goal? This was really strategic and helpful in checking off goals by the end of the year. And then, it’s broken down for you. 

08:34 – Setting S.M.A.R.T. and S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals

  • So S.M.A.R.T. goal is an acronym that spells out as

  • Specific, 

  • Measurable, 

  • Actionable, 

  • Risky, and 

  • Time-bound goals.

S.M.A.R.T.E.R. also added:

  • Exciting, and 

  • Relevant. 

If you are looking at setting goals this 2023, I encourage you to use the SMART and SMARTER format to outline and achieve your dreams.

  • It’s essential to be clear and concise about your dreams and goals. It’s a great exercise to do.

  • Take some time to physically write it down with pen to paper to bring it home in your brain and make that a reality so you can manifest what it is that you’re dreaming of.

  • Allow yourself to dream big. Be creative. You are creative, so allow yourself to be creative with your goals.

  • This method will give you some structure around that because, as you know, sometimes creative types struggle to build structure independently.

Without confidence, the interior design professional can never really thrive. Thankfully, confidence is something you can learn and emulate. Designer Eric McClelland shares some tips and tricks for staying confident, even in the toughest situations.

In this episode we learn:

  • limit project diversions initiated by the client

  • have a swift response and keep the project on track

  • 20 years ago, most designers did better work, since clients weren’t getting as involved

  • a concise concept eliminates some of the shopping that clients might do on their own

  • staying firm in your first choice (vs. backpedalling) is a display of confidence

  • it’s hard to exude confidence if you are backpedalling

  • sometimes our job is to say no, early in the project

  • use budget as the condition for changing your choices

  • when a client wants you to price multiple options, let her know it will create additional design fees
