Dear Alice - Jessica Bennett and Suzanne Hall - Is HGTV Ruining Design? | Design for You, Not the Masses - 50 min

There was an article that came out from The Washington Post, which was titled “HGTV is making our homes boring and us sad, one study says.” It goes in to unpack that everybody is trying to make their homes these perfect places like you see on TV, and we all know that the home is often the biggest investment we make in a lifetime and our whole lives and the lives of those around us are tied up in our homes.

So HGTV tells us that we have to make our homes the nicest possible and decorate it for the masses, and not our own happiness. Because there’s so much pressure to make our homes for the masses and maintain its value in the public eye, we might find there is much less of a personal touch to it. Our home is the place that we should feel the most comfortable.

Highlights

  • Join us for an Alice Lane event! 15:30

  • The HGTV article 19:45

  • Displacement of the professionalization of the home 27:15

  • The resale value of the home 37:45

  • “We don’t want our homes to look the same that we work on with the client because we want them to look like the client. We have to talk to them about who they are, what their origin is, where they went to school, what do their kids love? Those things are so vital in making the home successful because if it looks like me, cool if I’m moving in, but it doesn’t hold up and they won’t be happy. Our ultimate happiness comes when we can feel comfortable in our own place with our own people.” 30:00

Window Treatments for Profit with LuAnn Nigara - LuAnn Nigara - Vita’s Tip in 10 with Vita Vygovska: How Easy Is It For You to Ask For Money? - 14 min

Designer’s Oasis - Kate Bendewald - 3 Ways to Price Your Projects - REPLAY - 34 min

In order to know your profitability at the end of a project, it’s helpful to see what you estimated in the first place. Just like a budget for money, we need to budget our time.

Today’s topic is one of host Kate Bendewald’s most asked questions that she get about building your interior design business and that’s how to price your projects and come up with your service fees and feel more confident in your proposals when you send them out.

In this episode, Kate answer questions like…

  • How do you decide what type of pricing strategy (or a few of them) work best for your business?

  • Do you need to base fees on square footage?

  • How do you estimate your time?

Here’s a glance at this episode…

  • [05:22] Do you need to track your time? Is this important regardless of your fee and pricing method?

  • [06:37] Kate shares what 2 factors your fees should be based on no matter what the project scope entails. How to continue to price projects well even as you and your team become more efficient at project management.

  • [07:45] Kate sharse a few other methods on how to charge that may play a factor in how you charge for a project. Kate shares how charging by the square footage or overall project cost is used by some interior designers (personally, this is not what Kate uses and she shares why!)

  • [11:50] Kate discusses how to charge for your projects based on time and the value that you bring to the project.

  • [16:45] Kate jumps into the 3 types of pricing - hourly, flat fee, and hybrid. She share the pros and cons of each type and how we use them in our business.

  • [28:50] Kate shares her challenge to you for the week!

If you have been feeling stuck, anxious or confused then this episode will help you to be present, enjoy where you are and also gain clarity for the future.
