Interior Design Business - How to Handle Challenging Clients - 26 min

How do you handle clients who are difficult to work with?

A lot of business owners dread facing challenging clients because they don’t know how to handle them professionally while still sticking to their boundaries. It’s not fun dealing with challenging clients, but it does happen, so let’s talk about it.

In this episode, host Terri Taylor covers things like when to walk away from a situation, how to end a job that’s dragging on, how to communicate additional fees, and when to say no. I’m sharing my most effective solutions so that next time you face something like this, you’ll know exactly what to do.

Topics covered in this episode include:

  • How to excuse yourself from uncomfortable situations

  • How to fulfill a project when your client won’t make a decision or purchase

  • Standing up for yourself without creating drama

Profit Is A Choice - Delegating to Free Your Time - 28 min

In today’s episode, host Michele Williams chats with Dominique Deraiche. Dominique is a co-founder of Designer Elite, which provides Operations and Support for interior designers. Dominique & Michele discuss how to get help, how to determine when we're in overwhelm, and how to ask for support and delegate without dumping. Enjoy.

Topics Mentioned:

  • Delegate

  • Virtual assistant

  • Overwhelm

Key Thoughts:

  • It's very hard to say that we're process driven because everything's so custom, and it is custom. But having a process to work within then allows us the freedom to be so creative. Michele (4:32)

  • Some of the ways you could determine that you really need to reach out for help is if you have a huge to-do list. There are pieces of your business that are slipping through the cracks, you're pushing out projects because you're just so overwhelmed. Maybe you're completely turning away projects. These are all key indications that you should be reaching out for help and delegating some. Dominique Deraiche (9:25)

  • One of the ways that I suggest preparing to make it work with a virtual assistant is having an idea of what it is we think we need. Michele (17:22)

  • I always set the expectation, that we need to hire the right amount of people who are going to be specialists in these various areas. It's really rare to find one person who can mold themselves into all aspects of your business. Dominique Deraiche (23:16)

The Affluent Creative - Overcoming Client Objections for Designers - 35 min

Receiving objections from clients can feel incredibly uncomfortable without the right frame of mind. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of taking objections personally or resisting them outright. It can feel like your own worth is being rejected.

However, dealing with objections becomes much easier when you can learn to actually welcome them. They can instead become an opportunity to educate your client on the value of your design and the transformation that you are going to create for them.

In today’s episode, host Melissa Galt tackles how to overcome those negative associations with objections. Instead of being afraid and resisting when clients push back, I want to help you embrace them. The goal is to reframe the potential for an objection to be viewed as an opportunity to build more trust, clarity, confidence, and comfort for your client.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Ways to reframe your relationship with client objections

  • Why you should never reduce your fees

  • The importance of a thorough and vetted client agreement

  • How to distinguish between objections to overcome versus objections to honor

Now Parish’s legacy is being carried on into the 21st century as a fabric and wallpaper brand run by her granddaughter Susan Crater and great granddaughter Eliza Harris.

On this episode of the podcast, Susan & Eliza chat with host Dennis Scully about why Sister Parish was an entrepreneur ahead of her time, why they’re embracing both consumers and designers alike, and putting faith over fear as the industry enters a new era.
